Are you tired already? Are you dreading the entire fair week? Pre-fair prepping can help save your energy before, during and after the show. You are an ambassador for the livestock industry, 4-H and FFA. Do your mission well.
1. Show clothes to the cleaners the week before and ask for heavy starch. Worst case scenario is if you have to wash during the week your clothes will be easier to press up. Keep two sets in case the goat pees all over you or sneezes snot all over that clean shirt.
2. Check the animal blow dryer, the grooming stands, and feed pans. Make sure everything works and doesn't have holes or loose screws.
3. Do the lights work on your trailer? Have you kicked the tires. Is the bedding fresh?
4. Be smart use your smartphone memo reminder to jot your task as you think of them so you don't forget to get your vet papers or pack the show feed. It saves time.
5. Drink lots of water. Eat high protein breakfast. Skip the Dr. Pepper and donut. Drink orange juice and chow down on that grande breakfast burrito. It is going to be a long day.
6. Be kind to each other and your animals. It makes everything run smoother.
7. Pay attention to your weigh in times and stall assignments.
8. Keep your equipment picked up out of the aisles.
9. Remember fair attendees are just curious. Be a good teacher and answer their questions with diligence as they don't understand your way of life. You make sure they are comfortable your animal receives the best care and feed. Most show animals do receive better care than urban house pets.
10. Smile.
